Manufacturable fibre-optic Raman probe that will be used for label free sensing of malignant tissues

4MD was funded by £1.3M Platform Grant from EPSRC. The overarching objective of the 4MD Platform was to develop and exploit manufacturing technologies to provide medical device manufacture that is both practical and commercially viable, and hence to enable new and improved healthcare solutions.

This was to be achieved by flexibly resourcing our multidisciplinary team to enable a research programme focused on the intelligent combination of precision additive and subtractive manufacturing techniques for the manufacture of novel medical devices.

In all we have:

  • Funded 19 projects in 3 categories, investigator led, seedcorn and new academics
  • Achieved follow on funding of ca £11.3 M
  • The academic group has grown from 7 to 17
  • Growth of network with now a group of 35 collaborators
  • Developing careers with many promotions and new opportunities in industry

4MD Is working to develop and translate cutting edge manufacturing capabilities in order to enhance the fabrication, function and uptake of innovative medical devices in modern clinical practice with our high quality and internationally leading research.
